An Open Letter from a friend, Dr. Robert Sczech of the Rutgers Newark Department of Mathematics

(a true environmentalist in deed!)

Subject - Jess Ragaza: Thank you Robert for your incisive response to my request!

You will notice and I am sure appreciate that I am again sending a copy of this to my favorite large online groups in the cc as well as family, relatives and friends in the bcc,

I am beginning to miss our Mathematics Lectures at Rutgers Newark.

You are absolutely right that there are no good bicycle ways in our part of New Jersey. I remember actually just courageously pedaling in 2003 from Newark to North Bergen going through parts of Routes 1 and 9 (Pulaski Highway) practically brushing with the hammer and sickle of dangerously speeding cars!

I started (carefully and painfully) writing a more detailed constitution for the Citizens for Global Warming Research and Development http://livinggracefully.com/Global_Warming/citizens_for_global_warming_research_and_development_constitution.htm. Hopefully the concerns you mentioned in your e-mail will be appropriately addressed. Your advice is again needed. Everybody, particularly lawyers and writers, in my audience is encouraged to participate.

By the way, I just published the Financial Newsletter May 15, 2007  http://livinggracefully.com/Financial_Newsletter/Financial_Newsletter_May_15_2007.htm, but will address in a later issue your request in your previous communiqué.

Because of the importance and value of your response, please feel free to disseminate this e-mail as widely as possible.

Your friend,

Jess

(Ragaza)

Hi Jess,

thanks for your email. Regarding the energy crisis, I think in
the moment the most pressing need is actually a reduction of
fossil energy usage in the US. Even if nuclear fusion does
become reality one day, it is certain that a full implementation
of these types of reactors will take a very long time (3 decades
at least?). This is too long in order to prevent the energy
crisis which is just beginning. For that reason I feel, that
reducing fossil consumption in the short term will give us
breathing time in order to develop alternative energy sources.

Most important is: Invest into electrical railroads. The efficiency
of electrical engines is over 90% (40% for diesel engines). Moreover
due to lower friction, rail transport is roughly 10 times as
efficient as transport using cars running on a combustion engine.

Next, redesign our cities in such a way that people can use
a bicycle to get to work. I live in Jersey City and work in
Newark. Unfortunately, there is not a single road which I
could travel by bicycle from Jersey City to Newark. All
roads are highways and riding these highways by bicycle is
extremely dangerous and illegal.

Next, redesign all buildings in such a way that the energy
spent on heating and cooling these buildings is drastically
reduced. This is a colossal task which requires an enormous
effort. There is too much energy being wasted in buildings
and cars. A car moving on the highway wastes more than 99%
of the energy in form of heat. Only 1 percent is required
to transport the person. The rest is waste. For that reason,
I believe that our greatest efforts must go into increasing
energy efficiency. As a species we already consume too much
energy. Why? Well, we consume so much energy that it starts
to change the planet. Climate change is only one of the many
changes our civilization induces on the planet. These changes
may become only worse if nuclear fusion succeeds and energy
efficiency is not being addressed.

To sum up: Our greatest problem is not the energy crisis,
our greatest problem is that we use too much energy. As
you wrote in your email, we all need to discover the joy of
riding a bicycle. In my opinion, the bicycle is the greatest
invention humanity has ever come up with.

Thank you again and best wishes

Robert Sczech

We still have time to save Mother Earth!

(several decades)

Join our illustrious group, now consisting of highly educated and trained professionals around the world (some CEOs, Authors, PhDs, Consultants, etc.) to help solve Global Warming through innovative means such as development of Nuclear Fusion, the cleanest source of energy that could replace the culprit carbon dioxide emitting fossil fuels!

Acquire knowledge from our other numerous erudite contributions such as Starry-eyed physicists point to the promise of unlimited fuel and minimal waste. But politicians blanch at fusion's price tag and worry about getting burned http://livinggracefully.com/Global_Warming/starry.htm. Then apply it by taking action on your own, or with your family, friends and associates for instance to save on energy, minimize use of fossil fuels, etc.

Inequities are ingrained in living; otherwise Plato, Archimedes, Mozart, Einstein, ..., (Hitler?) will all be ordinary.

Beauty  is not in the eyes of the beholder but in countless of other possibilities that have yet to be.

There is nothing stable in the world; uproar's your only music.

I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.
--Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

To assist our fellow human beings in the most devastating events in recent history, I plead you to contribute to the relief effort done magnanimously by the American Red Cross.
